Welcome to the Cumberland County Register of Deeds website. As custodians and managers of large numbers of public records, we are proud to provide answers to any questions you may have regarding our office. The Register of Deeds office exists primarily to enable the owner of an interest in property to give public notice of that ownership. Our Land Records date back to 1754, which was the official beginning of Cumberland County.
We also house many other public records, such as notary oaths, births, deaths and marriage licenses. We are pleased to record military discharges (DD214’s) free of charge to our retired military. Effective August 1, 2020 limited search of only the vitals index will be available for births, deaths and marriages.
The General Statutes of North Carolina govern the Register of Deeds. We are responsible for the maintenance, integrity and safekeeping of all public records for which we are legally entrusted. Our office is committed to proper enforcement of these laws as we strive to provide the highest level of customer service.

Effective July 1, 2012 our office will be governed by new indexing standards according to the Administrative Code of the office of the North Carolina Secretary of State. In anticipation of these rule changes, we are making several upgrades to the systems in our office. In regard to the New Indexing Standards, we will “Key as you See,” names on a document including punctuation . For a brief overview of the standards, you may review the Important Notice about Real Property Document Indexing.
In addition to implementing the new standards, we will be closing out our current paper index. For your convenience, we are posting the rules that govern both the old and new standards, in addition to the types of documents, status and old abbreviations. The sort order for the new standards (ASCI II Sort Order) is listed; however, the new system will retrieve names under both sets of standards.
We are pleased to inform you that we have updated the public retrieval units to accompany the new software. Also, we have added dual monitors at the retrieval stations so that you will have the convenience of viewing the document on one screen, while referring back to the index on the other.
We have made every effort to make this a smooth transition. My staff and I stand readily available to assist you at any time. Thank you for allowing us to be of service to you.
